How the AFM Scent Lab works
The Scent Lab matches you to a cologne by comparing your answers with AFM ratings for 106 popular men’s fragrances. Each bottle is scored on four accords (fresh, sweet, spicy and woody), projection, longevity, the seasons it suits and the places it works best. Your answers build a profile, and the tool ranks every bottle by how closely it fits.
- Season dial: heavy, sweet scents rank higher in cold weather and fresh scents rank higher in heat.
- Scenes: an office pick needs to be clean and polite, while a bar or date pick can be bolder.
- Accord mixer: the biggest factor in your match. It sets the overall style of the scent.
- Scent radius and your day: how far the scent reaches (projection) and how long it lasts (longevity).
- Note swipes: notes you love push matching bottles up, and notes you dislike push them down hard.
How we rate longevity and projection
Our ratings are editorial estimates based on typical wear with 3–4 sprays. Longevity is the number of hours you can still notice the scent. Projection runs from 1 (skin scent) to 10 (fills the room). Skin type, weather and how much you spray all change real performance, so use the ratings as a guide and sample before you buy a full bottle. Our guide to sampling fragrances explains how.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my signature cologne?
Start with when and where you will wear it most, then decide how sweet or fresh you like your scents. The Scent Lab combines those answers to suggest a signature bottle plus budget, designer and niche alternatives. Sample your top two before committing.
What is the difference between designer and niche cologne?
Designer colognes come from fashion houses like Dior, Versace and Armani and are made for broad appeal. Niche colognes come from perfume-focused houses like Creed, Parfums de Marly and Xerjoff, and usually cost more for more distinctive formulas. Use the “Shop in” switch to see one or the other.
Which cologne lasts the longest?
In our database, the longest-lasting picks are dense sweet and spicy scents like Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, Lattafa Khamrah, Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Elixir and Mugler A*Men, which can last 12 hours or more. Fresh citrus and aquatic scents usually last 4–6 hours.
What is a good cologne for the office?
Clean, moderate scents work best at the office. Prada L’Homme, Bleu de Chanel, Montblanc Legend and Terre d’Hermès all score highly for office wear. Keep it to one or two sprays.
